THE CURRICULUM

In Grade 8 and 9, learners follow the same curriculum as learners in any school in South Africa. However, in preparation for the NSC subjects in Grades 10 to 12, training in Engineering Graphics and Design in included in the curriculum.

Subject Choices For NSC

The choice a learner makes in Grade 9 regarding the subjects to be taken in Grade 10 for the National Senior Certificate course of study is very important. If a learner makes a choice without thinking very carefully about it, it can ruin his/her chances of furthering his/her career after school.

NSC Subjects

  • Two official languages – Eng Hl or Eng FAL and Afrikaans HT or Afrikaans EAT
  • Mathematics or Technical Mathematics
  • Physical Science or Technical Science
  • Engineering Graphics and Design
  • Civil Technology or Electrical Technology or Mechanical Technology
  • Life Orientation

NSC Pass Requirements

Subject Pass
English Home Language 40 – 49%
Life Orientation 40 – 49%
Afrikaans Additional Language 30 – 39%
Maths or Maths Literacy 30 – 39%
One of the remaining three 40 – 49%
Two of the remaining three 30 – 39%

Tertiary Admission Requirements

Higher Certificate (College)
Pass NSC, together with any institutional requirements.

Diploma (old Technikon)
An achievement rating of 40 – 49% or better in 4 NSC subjects (except LO), together with any institutional requirements.

Bachelor’s Degree (old University)
An achievement rating of 50 – 59% or better in 4 NSC subjects (except LO, Technologies and CAT), together with any institutional requirements.
