The second Motormech Show took place for the second year in 2020 on the main school terrain and in the Automotive Workshop. The show is a collaboration between Newton THS and MIWA, the Motor Industry Workshop Association of the RMI. The objective of the show and skills competition is to create awareness of the employment potential of the motor industry and to expose our school to prospective learners. We enjoined considerable growth from the first year by seeing almost double the number of visitors of the day, compared to the attendance numbers in 2019. The number of exhibitors also increased from just over twenty in 2019 to almost forty this year.
The highlight of the day for our school was the Skills Competition that was won by our own Creighton Corris. He and Christine Hancock competed in four practical challenges against two boys of Otto du Plessis High School.
The challenges included engine timing, valve clearance, part identification, engine measurements and compression testing.
Messrs. JP Schuin, D. Kapp, C. Kapp and H. Crafford were the adjudicators for the Skills Competition as well as the Senior Skills Contest later the day, where qualified technicians competed in a more advanced competition.
The spectators certainly enjoyed the proceedings and we received many compliments and enquiries afterwards.
The entertainment included vintage cars, hot rods, customized cars, new Ford, new Toyota, new Haval, new Isuzu, tractors, BMW motorcycles, parts wholesalers, food and beverage stalls, kids’ entertainment including a mechanical bull, water dunk tank and a train for toddlers.
