Newton THS together with MIWA (Motor Industry Workshops Association) hosted the first-ever Motor Mech Show on 9 March 2019. The purpose of the event was to inform the public of career opportunities in the automotive industry, in particular on the sales, service and repair side of business.

The top student from each of the district’s four technical high schools competed against each other for the School Mechanic of 2019 title. The competition consisted of four skills challenges of 20 minutes each. They were tested on skills like valve clearance adjustment, part identification, cylinder and crankshaft measurements, brake servicing and auto-electrical fault finding

Learners also got valuable exposure to potential employers at workshops or dealerships. The competition was aimed at Grade 12 learners who had shown themselves to be confident in the trade of motor mechanics and who have a desire to pursue a career in this industry.
