Our deputy-headboy, Banele Joe, performed in the Talent Africa show during the month of April.

He makes Newton extremely proud by winning a golden award for the best overall performer. He will be travelling to New York on an all-expenses-paid trip to compete even further. He also received a full scholarship at the FPSA School of Performing Arts in Johannesburg for next year.

As preparation for Talent Africa, Banele worked with his teachers at CAMA to find monologues, drama works and music. He also attended sessions with a fellow student and gymnast, Monique Slabbert, to prepare for his dance items.

Banele’s motivation to enter was his love for the arts and the support he receives from the Creative Arts and Music Academy, where he has been trained as a performer. They helped hom from being a talented singer to a wonderful performer and helped him realise his hidden talents in acting, modelling and dance.

Although Banele’s future plans are not set in stone, he does know that he wants to learn as much as he can to grow as a performer before taking the world of the performing arts by storm.

When asked why he loves singing, he replied: “I sing because music is my outlet and escape, as I believe it is the reason why most performers perform. There’s just something special about being on stage and being vulnerable in that way and having an audience share in that vulnerability through your words, whatever character you are portraying or even in a dance number. Performing arts isn’t only something that I enjoy because it’s fun, it’s a form of expression.”
